Reed was dangerously wounded and taken P.O.W. at Blood River Poort on 17 September 1901, when Commandant General Louis Botha, on his second advance into Natal, surrounded and defeated a force of Mounted Infantry under Lieutenant-Colonel H. de la P. Gough. British losses were one officer and 19 men killed, five officers and 19 men wounded, and six officers and 235 men taken prisoner. This was the most humiliating defeat suffered by the British since Nooitgedacht in December 1900.
