Urban Ronald Pike Blaby was born in Tavistock, Devon, in October 1917, the son of a Bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery. Enlisting in the Royal Engineers in February 1940, he witnessed active service in North Africa and Italy, and was discharged in May 1946; sold with a quantity of original documentation, including his Record of Service Card, Soldier’s Will Form and two photographs, including a portrait of his father in Gunner’s uniform.
