M.C. London Gazette 15 October 1918. ‘T/Lt., K.A. Rif.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership when his post was attacked and his commanding officer killed. He assumed command and held the post for two days while ammunition lasted, and then most skilfully effected a withdrawal with all wounded and supplies. By holding up the enemy for two days he greatly assisted a major operation, and throughout he set a fine example of coolness and courage to his men’.

James Warwick Grant attested for the 9th Battalion Highland Light Infantry in 1914. On 7 January 1915 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion Cameron Highlanders. He left the battalion on 1 October 1915 and entered France on 3 October and was posted to the 5th Battalion Cameron Highlanders. With them he was wounded in action on 17 July 1916 and later in the year was posted to the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion. On 30 April 1917 Grant was posted to the 2/4th Battalion King’s African Rifles and was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 July 1917. He saw service with the 2/4th Battalion K.A.R. and was awarded the Military Cross for an action in East Africa. He later served as a Lieutenant in the National Defence Company from 25 August 1939.
