William Ballard lived at Pimlico and enlisted at Clapham Junction. Serving with the 23rd Battalion London Regiment and attached to the 3/2nd King’s African Rifles, he was killed in action at Mahiwa in East Africa on 18 October 1917, aged 23 years. He was buried in the Dar-es-Salaam War Cemetery. With copied war diary extracts and other research. Note: the C.W.G.C. site incorrectly lists his parent battalion as the 21st Battalion London Regiment.
