Cyril Deane Simmons, a Clerk by occupation, attested for ‘A’ Company, 1st Rhodesia Regiment at Salisbury on 28 October 1914. With the regiment he served in the campaign in German South West Africa, 22 December 1914-26 July 1915. He was demobilised in South Africa on 31 July 1915. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion Suffolk Regiment in December 1915, based at Mudros and then Egypt. He was transferred to the 1/4th Battalion Devonshire Regiment in Mesopotamia, 16 October 1916. Simmons was promoted to Lieutenant on 11 July 1917, appointed Battalion Transport Officer in June 1918 and O.C. ‘C’ Company on 30 September 1918. Following his demobilisation in 1919 he returned to Rhodesia. In civil life he was appointed an Acting Assistant Magistrate at Fort Victoria. In 1925 he was appointed Assistant Magistrate at Umtali and in 1928 he became an Acting Civil Commissioner and Magistrate at Gwanda. During 1934-35 he was Acting Civil Commissioner and Magistrate at Bulawayo. He held the same posts at Umtali in 1938 and Salisbury from 1939 until 1943 when he was appointed Chairman of the Public Services Board. With copied research and photographs.
