James Edward Gilham was born in 1870. He enlisted into the 25th Battalion Royal Fusiliers on 25 February 1915 and was promoted to Sergeant on 16 March 1915. Gilham entered the East Africa theatre of war on 4 May 1915. He was commissioned on 27 August 1915 and advanced to Captain on 18 June 1916. Admitted to hospital with malaria in January 1917, he was subsequently invalided to South Africa. He later served in the 1st [Reserve] Garrison Battalion Suffolk Regiment before being discharged due to ill health in 1919. At the time of his discharge his occupation in civil life was stated to be a gold miner.

With copied service papers, war diary and gazette extracts. In copied extracts from the 25th Battalion Royal Fusiliers War Diary Captain Gilham is mentioned several times, including in an action with the enemy at Ngurungani, 23 December 1916.
