James Mackie was born in Ayr, Scotland. Living in Australia and a Marine Fireman by occupation, he attested for the Australian Imperial Force on 14 August 1915, aged 26 years, 4 months. Posted to the 8th Battalion, he embarked at Adelaide on 11 October 1915 and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war. Mackie was transferred to the 6th Battalion on 22 February 1916. On 16 August 1916 he was reported as wounded and missing but was later declared as killed in action on that day. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
