Edward Avenel Breithaupt was born in Bangalore, India, on 17 July 1883. He was educated at Bowden House School, Sudbury Hill, Middlesex and at the United Services College, Westward Ho!, Devon. After attending Sandhurst he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Unattached List of the Indian Army on 18 January 1902. He arrived in India in March 1902 and was attached to the Warwickshire Regiment. In April 1903 he was posted to the 64th Pioneers. Promoted to Lieutenant in April 1904, he was transferred to the 63rd Palamcottah Light Infantry in May 1905. Promoted to Captain in February 1911, he was posted as Company Commander, 63rd P.L.I. in October 1914. He was second in command of the machine gun section, 63rd P.L.I. at Tanga, German East Africa, 3-5 November 1914. Promoted to Major in January 1917, he was second in command of the 63rd P.L.I. in October 1917. Posted to the 2/7th Rajputs as 2 i/c in June 1918 and thence to the 2/150th Infantry as 2 i/c in July 1919; being promoted to Commandant in June 1920. In December 1921 he was transferred back to the 63rd P.L.I. as 2 i/c, and in September 1922 was posted to the 73rd Carnatic Infantry as a company commander and 2 i/c. Breithaupt attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and was posted to the 1 Madras Pioneers in January 1928. Posted as Commandant of the 1/1st Madras Pioneers in April 1929.
