United States of America, Confederate States, Montgomery, One Thousand Dollars, 24 June 1861, no. 571, Clitherall-Elmore signatures, endorsement and interest stamp on back (Criswell 1; Pick 4). Two X cancellations and punch-holes in signature area leaving short tear in bottom edge, a few pinholes at left, three creases and light handling, otherwise good very fine, extremely rare £4,000-6,000

The highest denomination and the only one thousand dollar series issued by the Confederate government. A total of 607 notes were printed by the National Banknote Company in New York, with just 116 recorded as extant. Alexander Clitherall resigned his position on 16 July 1861; Edward Elmore resigned on 10 October 1864, a few weeks after challenging the editor of the Richmond Examiner to a duel
