Argentina, Hospital Salaberry, Buenos Aires, enlarged, bronze Art Deco plaquette, by Arigatti, 1925, 51 x 49mm; other Argentinian bronze medals in the Art Deco style (5); and an unusual bell-shaped bronze medal for Adolfo Alsina, 1916, 63 x 82mm [7]. Generally extremely fine (£80-100)
Argentina produced a great number of medals in the late19th and early 20th Century on a variety of subjects. As one might expect in a country that looked to Europe, particularly Paris, for cultural inspiration, most tend to mimic French masters; but although, in general, competently made and reflecting the vitality of Argentinian society at the time, very few, sadly, are of great artistic interest. The present group are an exception and, in the view of the catologuer, are excellent examples of Art Deco medallic design.
