Hammer Price:
£550

Eadgar (959-975), Penny, Circumscription Cross type, Eadulf, EADGAR REX ANGLORV, around cross, rev. EADVLF MONETA MERC around cross, 0.91g/5h (cf. CTCE 258/1; N 748; S 1134). Chipped and somewhat crimped, otherwise nearly very fine, extremely rare £200-300

Similar in style and lettering to the coin of the same moneyer published as CTCE 258/1, where the legend ends HANT and is attributed to Northampton. The reading of the final four letters is not certain but might suggest a regional title ‘money of’ or ‘moneyer for Mercia’

The mint may be Tamworth and the coin has been read as EADVLF MONE TAMEPO
