A Second World War North Africa operations M.M. group of six awarded to Lance-Sergeant W. R. Smith, Royal Artillery

Military Medal, G.VI.R. (812828 L. Sjt. W. R. Smith, R.A.); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, clasp, 8th Army; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, minor contact marks, good very fine and better (6) £800-1000

M.M. London Gazette 6 January 1944. The original recommendation – approved by Montgomery - states:

‘On 7 May 1943, Lance-Sergeant Smith’s gun was preceding along a track in the vicinity of Montarnaud with 6 Grenadier Battalion, 201 Guards Brigade, to which he was attached. The road was under heavy shell fire and Lance-Sergeant Smith’s gun tower was hit, mortally wounding one of his detachment. Lance-Sergeant Smith, although all the time under extremely heavy shell fire, managed to pull the wounded man out of the tractor and carry him to a place of safety.’

Walter Robinson Smith was serving in 158/53 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, R.A., at the time of the above cited deeds.
