James Mills attested for service with the Black Watch at Edinburgh on 5 December 1914, aged 27 years. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 1 June 1915. Serving with the 1st Battalion he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in action, probably during the battle of the Somme during 1916. He was discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve in February 1919.
