Flight Lieutenant John Alfred Wakeford, R.A.F.V.R., was awarded the D.F.C. in 1943 while serving with No.9 Squadron. Serving with the same squadron, Flight Lieutenant Wakeford and the crew of his Lancaster were killed in action during an attack on Cologne on 4 July 1943, he was aged 22 years at the time of his death. His name is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. He was the son of Charles E. A. and Engelina Elizabeth Wakeford, of Torquay, Devon.
