M.C. London Gazette 9 January 1918. ‘266073 C.S.M., L’pool. R.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a hostile attack on his posts a grenade was thrown into his trench. It did not immediately explode, so with great presence of mind he picked it up to throw it away, but, unfortunately, it exploded as he was doing so, and he was wounded in about twenty places. Although in great pain, he remained at his post and drove the enemy off with bombs and Lewis gun fire. He displayed throughout the greatest pluck and devotion to duty.’
