James MacDonald was born in Elgin on 10 August 1875. A Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 23 February 1898. He was advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in February 1901 when at Vernon; E.R.A. 2nd Class in February 1905 when on Firequeen, Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class in April 1909 when on Hecla, and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in April 1910 when at Vernon. He served during June 1914-April 1917 based at Cormorant (Gibraltar) and for the remainder of the war was mainly on the destroyer Nymphe. He was demobilised on 20 April 1920.
