Pair: Staff Sergeant J. Hartgrove, Army Service Corps

South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (C/3221 Pte. J. Hartgroove, A.S. Corps); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (3221 Sergt. J. Hartgrove, C. & T.C.) note different spelling of surname, contact marks, nearly very fine and better (2) £350-400

Joseph Hartgrove was born in Epping, Essex. A Baker by occupation, he attested for the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade at Westminster on 28 September 1870, aged 19 years. He was transferred to the Army Service Corps in October 1872 and was promoted to 2nd Corporal in April 1881. In June 1881 he re-engaged, serving in the Commissariat and Transport Corps, being promoted to Sergeant in April 1885. Returning to the Army Service Corps in 1888, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant in August 1891. Hartgrove served overseas in South Africa, June 1879-February 1880 and in Gibraltar, November 1884-October 1889. He was discharged on 28 September 1891. Sold with copied service papers.
