South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Lieut: The Hon: A. J. G. Byng, 7th Hussars) toned, nearly extremely fine and very rare £1200-1500

Four officers and one private soldier of the 7th Hussars received a medal for the Zulu War.

Alfred John George Byng was born on 4 May 1851, the son of George Stevens Byng, 2nd Earl of Strafford, and Lady Agnes Paget, daughter of Field Marshal Sir Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey. He was gazetted Cornet in the 7th Hussars, by purchase, on 30 October 1869, becoming Lieutenant by purchase in March 1871. He embarked with cavalry drafts in May 1879, and served during the war with the Field Force in Natal and Transvaal. He was promoted to Captain in July 1880 and subsequently served as A.D.C. to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He married, 10 January 1887, Lady Winifred Herbert, daughter of the 4th Earl of Carnarvon, but died without issue on 8 November 1887.
