Alfred John Austin, who was appointed an Ensign in the 30th Foot in June 1854, quickly witnessed active service in the Crimea, where he served before Sebastopol and was wounded in the assault on the Redan on 8 September 1855 - the regimental history also verifies his subsequent award of the Turkish Order of Medjidie, 5th class. He was advanced to Lieutenant in November 1855; sold with research.
