Private Edward Holgate, 1st/5th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in action on 1 July 1916, one of only 12 killed in this battalion on the first day of the battle of the Somme. He was the son of Joseph Edward and Ada Holgate, of Keighley, Yorkshire, and is commemorated by name on the Thiepval Memorial.
