Colonel Clive Wigram, 1st Baron Wigram of Clewer, was born in 1873 and educated at Winchester and the Royal Military Academy. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1893, was A.D.C. to Lord Elgin, Viceroy of India in 1895 and exchanged to the 18th Lancers, Indian Army in 1897. Serving on the N.W. Frontier of India, 1897-98, he was awarded the I.G.S. Medal with three clasps. He was A.D.C. to Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, 1899-1904 and served in the Boer War, being mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 10 September 1901) and awarded the Queen’s medal with six clasps. After the war he was Assistant to the Chief of Staff during the Prince of Wales’ visit to India, 1905-06. He was granted the brevet ranks of Major in 1906, Lieutenant-Colonel in 1915 and Colonel in 1919. Wigram was at the Indian Staff College, 1906-08, and was Military Secretary to the G.O.C.-in-C, Aldershot Command, 1908-10. Amongst his court appointments he was an Assistant Private Secretary and Equerry to the King, 1910-31, Private Secretary and Extra Equerry to the King, 1931-35, Keeper of the Privy Purse, 1935-36, and Deputy Constable of Windsor Castle, 1936-45. Additionally, he was a Fellow of Winchester College, a Governor of Wellington College, a Governor of Haileybury and Imperial Service College and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical and Zoological Societies. For his many services he was appointed a Privy Councillor in 1932, a G.C.B. in 1933 (K.C.B., 1931; C.B., 1918), a G.C.V.O. in 1932 (K.C.V.O., 1928; C.V.O., 1915; M.V.O., 1903), a recipient of the Royal Victorian Chain in 1937, a C.S.I. in 1911, and in 1935 was created the 1st Baron Wigram, of Clewer in the County of Berkshire. Lord Wigram died on 3 September 1960.
