Kenneth Douglas-Morris in The Naval Long Service Medals, lists 24 known examples (including that to Riley) of the scarce V.R. narrow suspension, impressed named medal with years of service on edge.

Daniel Riley was born in Kinsale, Cork, on 11 December 1827. He served as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the Hibernia, March 1845-March 1846; Thetis, November 1846-July 1847; Superb, February 1847-November 1848; Caledonia, January 1849-June 1851; Trafalgar, June 1851-January 1854; then as an Able Seaman aboard the Trafalgar, January 1854-April 1855; Russell, April 1855-May 1856, and Hogue, June 1856-March 1857. Russell was then employed as a Boatman with the Coast Guard, March 1857-December 1877, being granted the Long Service Medal on 8 December 1866. Sold with copied service papers.
