Punniar Star 1843 (Private Hawthorn Stewart, H.M. 9th or Queen’s Royal Lancers) replacement silver straight bar suspension, very fine £400-450

Hawthorn Stewart enlisted into the 2nd Dragoons at Glasgow on 15 November 1837, aged 20 years. After serving in Ireland and England he volunteered for the 9th Lancers in May 1842 and soon after sailed for India. With them he served in the Gwalior Campaign, seeing action at Punniar, 29 December 1843. With the regiment he served in the First Sikh War, seeing action at Sobraon for which he was awarded the Sutlej Medal 1845-46 with reverse for Sobraon. He then served in the Second Slkh War, for which he received the Punjab Medal 1848-49 with clasp for Mooltan. Stewart sailed for England and his discharge in 1851. Sold with copied roll extracts.
