Peter Hoad was born in the Parish of Ashburnham, Battle, Sussex. A Labourer by occupation he enlisted into the Royal Sussex Regiment at Hastings on 8 January 1895. With the 1st and 2nd Battalions he served in India, December 1896-January 1907, for which service he was awarded the India Medal 1895 with two clasps. Remaining in India after his discharge on 8 January 1907, he joined the Volunteers. In 1925 he was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal as a Private in the Calcutta Presidency Battalion A.F.I., ref. I.A.O. 591 of July 1925. With copied service papers and other research.
