Alfred Henchman Crowfoot was born on 14 September 1881, the second son of William Miller Crowfoot, F.R.C.S., J.P., of Beccles, Suffolk. He was educated at Fauconberg in Beccles, Marlborough College, and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He gained a B.A. in 1902 and M.A. in 1908. After training at Wells Theological College in 1903, he was ordained a Deacon in 1904 and Priest in 1905. Crowfoot was Curate of Wigan, Lancashire, 1904-1909. In 1909 Crowfoot emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada. He was Missionary in charge of Grand Falls and Madawaska, New Brunswick, 1909-11; Rector of Hampton, New Brunswick, 1911-18, and then Rector of St. Paul’s Church, St. John, New Brunswick, 1918-27. In 1926 he had the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity conferred upon him by King’s College, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was Archdeacon of St. John, 1917-27, and Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Fredericton, 1920-27. Crowfoot was appointed Dean of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and Rector of Quebec in 1927 and remained so until 1947. He then became Assistant Priest at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, Ontario, 1947-51.

Crowfoot served in the Canadian Militia for over 20 years. He was appointed an Honorary Chaplain in the Canadian Chaplain Service on 16 June 1923. He was then appointed Chaplain of the New Brunswick Dragoons from that date. On 1 July 1928 he was appointed Chaplain of the 13th Field Brigade, Royal Canadian Artillery. Crowfoot was promoted an Honorary Major in the Canadian Chaplain Service on 1 November 1937 and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Canada), this notified in the Canada Gazette of 30 October 1943.
