During the Great War, Melville Fowler Gladman served as Private in the Canadian Tank Corps. In between the wars he served in the Canadian Militia. He was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Canadian Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) on 14 April 1930; the regiment being based at London, Ontario. He was advanced to Lieutenant in July 1932 and Captain in April 1936; in August 1939 he was appointed Adjutant. Gladman was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Canada) by General Order 98 published in the Canada Gazette of 21 April 1945.
