On 10 June 1917 Harold Theodore Bird was granted a commission from an Officers’ Cadet Unit at Uckfield, as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery, Supplementary Reserve of Officers. After the War he went to Trinity College, University of Dublin and graduated in 1921 as a B.A., and later B.A.I. (Bachelor of Engineering). In civil life he was employed as an Engineer on the Railways. In June 1929 he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers Supplementary Reserve of Officers, Transportation. He served in the 150th (London and North Eastern) Railway Construction Company. Bird was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1930 and Captain in February 1938. Serving in the Second World War, Bird was advanced to Acting Major in January 1940, Temporary Major in April 1940, War Substantive Major in April 1942, and Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in April 1942. He relinquished his commission in July 1948 and was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. The award of his Army Emergency Reserve Decoration and clasp was published in the London Gazette of 3 November 1953. With copied research.
