Nand Singh’s I.D.S.M. was awarded in respect of the Waziristan operations (G.G.O. No. 875 of 1924 refers).

In November 1924, the 2-3rd Sikh Pioneers departed Ramzak for Manzai, the cantonment between Tokhi Zam and the mouth of the River Gomal, a journey in which they were subjected to considerable sniping. And it was for gallant deeds during one such encounter, when a Sikh Pioneer was killed and three others wounded, that Nand Singh won the I.D.S.M. - so, too, Lance-Naik Gujiar Singh.
