A Third Afghan War M.C. group of nine awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel P. C. Scudamore, Indian Army, who was serving in the 11th Rajputs at the time of winning his decoration

Just 21 M.Cs were gazetted in 1920 for the Third Afghan War - British Gallantry Awards, by Abbott & Tamplin, refers.

M.C. London Gazette 3 August 1920:

‘For distinguished service in the Field in the Afghan War, 1919.’

Philip Cowie Scudamore, who was born in August 1891, was first commissioned in January 1911, and joined the 11th Rajputs on his arrival in India later that year.

Active service in Iraq in 1915-16 and South Waziristan in 1917 followed, during the course of which operations he was wounded, and, afterwards, as a recently advanced Captain, in the Third Afghan War.

Transferring as a Company Commander to the 4th Battalion, 7th Rajputs in February 1924, he was advanced to Major in January 1928 and witnessed further active service on the North West Frontier 1930-31; so, too, in 1936-37 as C.O. of the 2nd Battalion, following his advancement to Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1935.

Placed on the Retired List in June 1939, Scudamore was recalled on the renewal of hostilities and onetime was employed by the Inspectorate of Chemical Warfare, G.H.Q. India.
