William Johnstone Bennett was born in 1913 and joined the Northamptonshire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1933, becoming Lieutenant in 1936. On 25 November 1936, the regiment attacked a steep feature east of Damdil, Waziristan. The regimental history states: ‘Indoing this they had no casualties but had some narrow shaves; Lieut Bennett only recently promoted, had one of his newly acquired stars shot from his shoulder’. He retired as a Major in 1958 and served subsequently for a while on the Army Emergency Reserve General List. The Army List confirms medal and clasps.
