Captain of the Maintop William George Elkes was very severely wounded in the right thigh at the battle of Amoaful on 31 January 1874

He was born at Woolwich on 30 September 1847, and joined the Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 1 May 1862. Whilst serving as a Gunner aboard H.M.S. Avon he took part in the Niger expedition of 1877 ‘when several piratical villages were destroyed and severe punishment inflicted on the river pirates; also in the expedition up the Congo 1877 to punish repeated acts of piracy’. Petty Officer Gunner Elkes died in service at Haslar hospital on 7 April 1886. Sold with full research.
