James Lewis Bradshaw was appointed Ensign in the 80th South Staffordshire Regiment on 27 January 1857, becoming Lieutenant in July 1858, Captain in October 1868, and Major in July 1875. He served with a detachment of the 80th in the Perak expedition of 1875-76 (Medal with Clasp); and also served in the Zulu war in 1879, when he proceeded to Natal in May of that year in command of a draft of 143 men for the regiment (Medal with Clasp). He retired in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1882.
