John Francis Lawson was born on 12 October 1881, and joined the R.A.M.C. in August 1914, serving at the 1st Southern General Hospital at Edgbaston until October 1915, when he was commissioned into the South Midland (Warwick) R.G.A. as 2nd Lieutenant. Seconded to the Royal Flying Corps in September 1916, he served in Egypt until March 1917, was promoted to Flight Commander, R.F.C., in February 1918, and was commissioned in the Royal Air Force in August 1918.
