The pair of campaign medals awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Shearman, 62nd Regiment, who was mortally wounded whilst commanding his regiment in the assault on the Quarries in June 1855

Sutlej 1845-46, for Aliwal 1846, 1 clasp, Sobraon (Lieut., 62nd Regt.) fitted with contemporary silver ribbon brooch; Crimea 1854-55, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Lt. Col. 62nd Regt.) officially impressed naming, the clasp loose as issued and stitched to the original long length of ribbon, at the end of which is also stitched a fine contemporary miniature Sutlej medal, of small size and fitted with ring suspension, both medals toned, the first with light contact marks but better than very fine, the second extremely fine, a rare and attractive pair (2) £900-1200

Lieutenant-Colonel Robert A. Shearman was slightly wounded at Sebastopol on 21 April 1855 (London Gazette 5 May 1855). On the 7th June 1855 he commanded the 62nd in the attack on the position known as the Quarries, in front of the Redan, which was finally taken after a murderous fight lasting through the night. Shearman was mortally wounded in this attack and died of his wounds on the 8th June (London Gazette 22 June 1855). He was the only Lieutenant-Colonel and the most senior officer killed in this attack.
