D.C.M. London Gazette 30 June 1915: ‘For most gallant conduct and consistent good work in patrolling; on one occasion especially he brought in a wounded man in daylight and under a heavy rifle fire.’

James Cowan, born Dumfries, enlisted Stirling, was killed in action, France & Flanders, on 29 April 1915. He appears to be entitled to a medal/s for the Boer War. According to the battalion War Diary he represented the battalion on the occasion of a visit by King George V to the front on 2 December 1914.
