Henry Buchannan ‘Johnny’ Kirk fought at Modder River and Magersfontein, and was severely wounded at Koodoesberg on 7 February 1900. He was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 10 September 1901. He went to the front in November 1914 and commanded the 2nd battalion until February 1915. He took command of the 1st battalion in March 1915 and held that position until July 1915, all through the second battle of Ypres. He was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 31 December 1915 and 1 January 1916. Brigadier-General Kirk died of meningitis at Le Trepoty Hospital on 12 May 1916.
