South Africa 1834-53 (Lieut. Sir J. Bethune, Bt. 91st Regt.) dark toned, good very fine £600-800

John Trotter Bethune, 10th Earl of Lindsay, 9th Viscount Garnock, and 18th Baron Lindsay of the Byres, wasa born on 3 January 1827, son of Major-General Sir Henry Lindsay Bethune, Baronet of Kilconquhar (Cr. 1836), and de jure 9th Earl of Lindsay. He purchased an Ensigncy in the 91st Foot on 13 October 1842, and similarly, a Lieutenancy on 19 February 1847. He served in the Kaffir Wars of 1846 and 1847, and resigned his commission in late 1851. He succeeded his father as 2nd Baronet on 19 February 1851, and established his right to the titles of 10th Earl Lindsay etc., in 1878.

The titles had not been used for a number of years due to the impoverishment of the entitled family. David, de jure 7th Earl Lindsay, served as a Sergeant in the Army, and on his death, without issue, in May 1809, the titles passed de jure to another branch of the family. John Trotter Bethune died without issue on 12 May 1894.
