Thomas Harris was born in the Parish of Caversham, near Reading, and attested for the 3rd Foot on 3 September 1869. He served abroad for 2 years and 5 months in Mauritius, and for 11 months at the Cape and in Zululand. Sold with copy discharge papers which state that “He was shut up in Ekowe.” This is a reference to the siege of Eshowe (or Ekowe) when a column under Colonel C. K. Pearson, with some companies of the Buffs, were besieged by the Zulus from 23rd January until 3rd April, 1879.
