Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, V.R., small letter reverse (No.1153 Pvt. Joseph Chamberlain, 54 Regt.) engraved naming, good very fine £150-200

Private Joseph Chamberlain was a present aboard the Sarah Sands on her ill fated passage to India, when on 11 November 1857 she caught fire. The men of the 54th, who were on board bound for active service to quell the mutineers in India, provided invaluable help in saving the ship and all the lives on board. The ships crew themselves being of little use, many of them being in irons, as a result of themselves mutinying, earlier on in the journey. Private Chamberlain is not entitled to an Indian Mutiny Medal. Sold with copied service papers.
