Three: Private John Lyon, Manchester Regiment

John Hardman Lyon was born in the Parish of Upton, near Chester. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for service in the Manchester Regiment at Chester on 19 July 1899, aged 18 years, 3 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in South Africa, 9 November 1901-10 March 1903; Singapore, 11 March 1903-19 December 1904, and India, 20 December 1904-30 April 1907. For his service in the Boer War he was awarded the Queen’s medal with clasps for Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. Lyon was transferred to the Army Reserve on 18 July 1907. Recalled for service in the Great War, he served with the 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment in France/Flanders, 27 October-27 November 1914, being returned to England due to bronchitis. After service at Home with the 3rd Battalion, he was posted to Egypt with the 11th Battalion on 25 November 1915, serving there until July 1916. After further service in France, July-October 1916, he was posted home and was discharged on 20 January 1919. With copied details taken from service papers, together with a family tree and related copied death certificates.
