Budhsing Gurung first entered the service on 21 December 1904. He was commissioned as Jemadar on 15 February 1917, becoming Subadar on 20 December 1919, and Subadar-Major of the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles (Frontier Force) on 1 January 1926. He served during the War of 1914-21, in Egypt from 4 December 1914 to 2 June 1915 and 20 December 1915 to 23 February 1916; and in Gallipoli from 3 June to 19 December 1915 (Wounded, I.D.S.M.). He subsequently served in Waziristan 1922-23 (Despatches London Gazette 30 May 1924).
