Henry Lyell was born in Hampshire, in 1804, 3rd son of Charles Lyell, of Kinnordy, J.P. and vice-lieutenant of Forfarshire. He was the father of Sir Leonard Lyell, 1st Baron Lyell, and the great-grandfather of Captain The Lord Lyell, V.C., Scots Guards. A cadet at Sandhurst, Henry Lyell was posted as an Ensign to the 29th Native Infantry in 1823. He transferred to the 2/22nd N.I. in the same year, this regiment being re-numbered 44th N.I. in 1824. He transferred to the 43rd N.I. (late 1/22nd) in May 1825 and served with that regiment as a Captain throughout the First Afghan War and during the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, being very severely wounded at Sobraon by two gunshot wounds, one in the left heel and one in the left arm. Granted a gratuity of 9 months pay for his wounds, Lyell went on furlough from April 1847 until November 1851 when he was given the brevet of Major. He retired from the service on the pension of a Captain, from 6 March 1854, and was made brevet Lieutenant-Colonel on 28 November of that year. Lieutenant-Colonel Lyell died in London on 5 February 1875. Sold with full research.
