M.C. London Gazette 16 August 1917: ‘T/Lt. Albert Lewis Leighton, K.R.R.C. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the whole of three days and two nights he personally supervised under heavy fire the laying and maintaining of communications. He set a splendid example to all and maintained communications throughout the battle.’

Albert Lewis Leighton was born in Surrey on 22 December 1895, and educated at Westminster School. He was appointed Temporary 2nd Lieutenant, 13th (Service) Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, on 22 September 1914, being promoted to Lieutenant on 1 January 1915, and Captain on 14 September 1917. He was invalided in October 1917, and was later Instructor of an Officer Cadet Battalion, from February 1918 until October 1921. He was appointed Captain, R.A.S.C. in June 1940, and died on 4 February 1958.
