Frederick John Young was born on 8 December 1924 at Roma, Queensland, Australia, and joined the R.A.N.R. on 12 November 1942. He was assigned to H.M.A.S. Manoora, a Landing Ship Infantry (Large), on 5 March 1943, serving through until 3 April 1943. This ship took part in the assault landings at Milne Bay (August ‘43), Tanahmerah Bay (April ‘43), Wakde Islands (May ‘44), Morotai (15 September ‘44), Leyte (October ‘44), Lingayen (January ‘45), Brunei (June ‘45), Tarakan (May ‘45), and Balikpapan (July ‘45).
