Evan Lewis Davies was born at Abercarne, Monmouthshire, and was killed aboard the steamship Goathland when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine ten miles south of Belle Ile on 4th July 1917. Twenty-one men, including the captain, were killed. He is commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial, Tower Hill, London.
