London Gazette 26 September 1917 (Citation 8 January 1918): ‘31988 Battery Sergeant Major J. R. Fenwick, R.A. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a column of pack horses laden with ammunition. The track was under heavy shell fire and also barraged with gas shell. The conditions were so bad that all traffic had ceased, but with great determination and initiative he led the column along side tracks and succeeded in delivering all the ammunition to the guns.’
