Alfred John Alick Gascoigne was born at Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire, in February 1908, and enlisted as a Boy into the Royal Artillery at Birmingham in February 1924. He served in Palestine with 45 Battery 20 Field Brigade, and was promoted to Sergeant in 1938. Qualified and appointed Acting Battery Quartermaster Sergeant (Instructor of Gunnery) in October 1938, and became Experimental Staff Sergeant in May 1939. He was shortly afterwards posted to the Military School of Science, Proof and Experimental Establishment, and in May 1940 was posted to the P. & E.E. at Inchterf, near Glasgow. He was commissioned in July 1942 and was appointed Deputy Assistant Proof and Experimental Officer at Inchterf, and subsequently in the same capacity at the Ministry of Supply Arms Research Depot. Retired in November 1945, he relinquished his commission in March 1954, and died in Zimbabwe on 16 January 1981.
