Hugh Fawcus was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in October 1875, and educated at Malvern. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, from Militia Artillery, in June 1897, and served in China with “B” Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, during the Boxer Rebellion. He was mentioned in despatches for his ‘exceptionally good work’ during the Mohmand operations in 1908, when he was commanding 80 Battery, 45 Brigade, R.F.A. Recalled for war service in 1914, he went to France in November 1914 and later served with the Labour Corps, becoming Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1917.
