James McConnell, a native of Belfast, served with 13 Battalion R.G.A. in the Sierra Leone campaign in 1898-99 and received one of only 64 clasps awarded to the Royal Artillery for this campaign. He was awarded the M.S.M. for devotion to duty in France London Gazette 17 June 1918, but the award of the Croix de Guerre has not been confirmed.
