William John Crawford was born in February 1870, in Belsfast, Co. Antrim, and attested at Leith Fort, Glasgow, in November 1888. He served in India in the Miranzai Expedition of 1891, and with the Chitral Relief Force in 1895. He subsequently served in South Africa with 18 Battery 3 Brigade (Queen’s medal with 3 clasps), and was discharged in November 1901.
